Mater Dolorosa. Oil on wood panel. It represents the Virgin Mary with her soul pierced by a sword in accordance with the prophecy of Simeon in the Temple of Jerusalem during the presentation of the Child. The Virgin has a beautiful and unique expression of deep but serene sorrow highlighted by the chiaroscuro of the painting. Unsigned. Wooden frame.
Origin: Spain Period: 17t/ 18th century. Baroque. Conditions: Very good. Wear consistent with age and use. Frame is poor and has traces of woodworm. It is apparently more recent than the painting.
